The latest episode of the Art of Dying Well podcast takes listeners through the doors of St. Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney, East London for an insider’s look at the outstanding care and hospitality provided there.
Host James Abbott spent a day at St. Joseph’s listening to staff, volunteers, and patients to learn what makes the hospice’s approach so special.
“A hospice is far more than just a building. It’s a philosophy of care focused on meeting people wherever they need hospice care and helping them live well until they die,” Joint CEO Jane Naismith explained in the episode.
The podcast explores the range of services St. Joseph’s offers, from inpatient care to a lively day hospice program to community outreach.
Abbott was particularly struck by the warm, laughter-filled atmosphere in the day hospice. “It’s an opportunity for [patients] to engage with other patients, access services like complementary therapies and physiotherapy, and go home with a big smile. We’re like one big family,” day hospice manager Zainab Ali told Abbott. Interviews with day hospice patients underscored the value of the friendship, activities, and chance to forget their illnesses for a while.
The episode also delves into St. Joseph’s roots in East London since its founding in 1905, and how the hospice continues to evolve to meet the community’s changing needs. As Naismith says near the episode’s end, hospice care ultimately comes down to “being human, about shared humanity, and being prepared to support each other.”
